the thing about the water fountain is, the coach 'wilford brimley' all season has been complaining about the taste of the water from that water fountain, the thinner guy with the 'stache always replies "judge (the owner of the team) is workin' on it" and then in this scene, Wilford doesn't complain about it at all he just drinks it.

@GaryBoy54 As much as I love the Natural, I might give Tom Selleck as Jack Elliot in Mr. Baseball the nod for best performance as a baseball player. Selleck is totally beleveable both in his hitting and his fielding - he kind of reminded me of Donnie Baseball with that mustache. Yes The Natural is a far better movie, and Redford a much better actor but I thought Selleck looked the most like a baseball player (that includes Costner, Dennis Haysbert and Tom Berenger).

@jimraw1 Yeah he was still at that age a guy that could carry himself well and still had that boyish appeal. Though he could not make Natural 2 now as he has aged quite a bit since then-mostly seems to be from too much colorado sun. I picked up the Blu-Ray a week ago and anyone that likes the movie should too because there are some great stories and shots in the extras. Watching Redford hit in practice you can see that he knew how to hit and gave the best performance as a baseball player ever!

Great point. She plays the part of a conniving shill well, but one with something of a conscious. She's actually trying to undermine her own uncle, but meeting Roy makes her understand what she actually has turned out to be. IMO that's why she shoots the pistol and calls him a bastard in the judge's office. Hobbs has shown her for the low life schemer that she actually is, and she hates him for doing so. Actually she hates herself because she'll never be what she really wants, to be loved.

Whatever one thinks of the movie, I can't think of another movie that brings the myth of baseball to life as well as The Natural - and no sport (outside of soccer, perhaps) has as much myth interwoven into its tapestry as baseball. To compare, Eight Men Out is a far more realistic baseball movie, but The Natural is the one we will always remember.

@jurgen974 To be honest, I find the movie better to Malumad's novel. In spite of creating some memorable scenes, it's not particularly great baseball writing. Consider the difference between The Natural (Malumad's first work) and later works such as The Fixer. Even better is Malumad's terrific short story work - he might be arguably the best American short story writer of his generation. Malumad thought the movie "legitimized" himself as a writer - nowhere as heavy handed.

does no one realize this was based on malamud's the natural? yes, it's an arthurian parable, but hobbs was intended to be the flawed hero...much as i like this movie, it makes little sense when compared to the book...the entire point of the work was that he was doomed to failure from the very start simply because he is consistently victimized by his own desires, greed, lust, gluttony and pride being the most prominent...also, he strikes out at the end

The Natural didn't use steroids & Babe Ruth got it done with hot dogs and beer. Those were the ultimately pristine times for baseball. In addition the ballpark dimensions were deeper then too. Today there is nothing but controversy. To think the controversy of Hobbs and his past ............ certainly many a players today don't want to reflect about their past (steroids/HGH) i.e. A-Rod ........ of whom said let us just move on from this day forward. In a 1946 game played at Ebbetts Field, Bama Rowell of the Boston Braves hit a shot to right field that hit the Bulova clock at the top of the outfield scoreboard, shattering it into pieces. The clock functioned one hour after the impact and then stopped. It was ruled a ground rule double. Bulova Corp offered a watch to any player that could hit the clock, Rowell got his in 1987

Just so you guys know, based on the physics of the flight path and trajectory of a baseball the MAXIMUM distance a ball can travel is around 560 feet. The only problem is that for you? to generate that kind of bat speed you would have to use the optimum weight which is around 18 ounces. So I highly doubt anyone on planet Earth has ever hit a ball more that 530 feet much less 570. Just wanted to clear things up.

It seems to me that not even young-earth geologists realise what it means that God is almighty. God is an artist, he is the Master Sculptor of eart`s surface. He can create anything on earth at any moment, so in principle no geological phenomena have to be a result of natural processes. There is no way to distinguish what was done by God in miraculous way from what was caused by natural processes along those 6200 years during which the universe have been existing.
