I just came back from Ethiopia. I spent almost a year in cities such as Addis ababa, jima, nazret(adama), bahir dar and Gondar. Ethiopia is not poor. It is a country rich in natural resources. However the government is corrupt and would rather spend all its money on wars to destabilize the neighboring than spend on its population. Things are getting better in Ethiopia though and the current prime minister is not nearly as bad the ones before him. The west is ruining Ethiopia.

I think that this is a great way for someone to be able to give back ... TOMS does make money, of course. But consider that they would make much more if they didn't. It is definitely not a non-profit - but it is doing charity work.

Well that's definitely part of it, wrinkle. The more disturbing part to me is that this company tries to pass itself off as a cause. Obviously its working because someone commented that they thought TOMS was non-profit, which is quite laughable. Here's the thing: they are doing something, which is more than the average Joe, sitting on his lazy boy, eating potato chips.
