true. one of the services i rode when i was in medic class wasnt allowed to give oxygen without asking permission. the service i work under is true busy for the doctor to sit on the radio so, they have gave us permission to do what is needed. there are some drugs we do have to call for or call for a second dose. protocols are not the same for every service. i totally agree with you there not that i was disagreeing to begin with.

Man it must be a different story for cops in Oklahoma. Here if a cop pulled that shit on a medic you can guarantee his life would be a living hell for the rest of his career. Emergency personnel work alongside pretty closely here. And ER staff would also give him hell. Making him wait 4 hours to get his jail clearance through, refusing to allow him access to patients he needs testimony and/or labs from...there's all sorts of things. Cops rely heavily on EMS...burying himself alive there.

I don't see the problem with what the driver did,there was a car in front of him that restricted him from pulling over straight away and the cop car was right up behind and there wasnt enough space for the driver to slow down and pull over,the driver did the only thing he could do move around the car then pull over,the cop was on a power trip and just because he is the law dsnt give him the right to talk to citizens that way.

And while it is true that the trooper may have over reacted. Or even be wrong for some of the things he did or how he did them. You still have to consider the facts that provolked it all. You can not hold that trooper to a level of behavior then confront him with a contrary one that MAKES some action required. You can't say HE's got to be better than that> BUT WE DON"T! If it weren't for the dash cam that showes what actually happened the whole time some of what the emt and driver would have said might have been right and accepted. Right up until you compare what BOTH the emt and the driver said seperately WITHOUT the dashcan video released yet. The video contraverts THEIR testimony as to what factually happened. Then we come to the point where the ambulance actually does pull over. WHY there iF not earlier? THE driver KNEW he had screwed up earlier and was NOW trying to do the right thing. On the other hand? The cop was running under emergency rules as instructed by dispatch. HIS SIREN was on and could be easily heard. Imagine what that ambulance driver would have said and how he would have felt IF THE CAR in front of HIM failed to give way, and hindered the ambulance? OR given him the finger while finally passing after having to slow to their speed. The emt in the back MAY be in control. BUT HE IS NOT THE DRIVER. THE driver has the responsability to judge safe conditions and act accordongly. HE DIDN"T. Cops know that an ambulance is on a HOT run rather than just normal transport by IF the ambulance lights and siren are on and used. If only normal transport? As an EMT with the Texas Department of State Health Services, I cannot tell you how much this "state trooper" is in the wrong. Safety comes: ours, our partners, then our patients. Whoever is the medic in the back is always the one in charge. period. Paramedics are EMTs with more training. To become a Paramedic, you must hold an EMT Basic license. We both do the same job - save the patient, we just do it with different tools. Regardless of training, field experience is the biggest difference and a new paramedic may not have the experience of an old EMT Basic.

A good way to get respirations on an alert patient is to take their pulse and then fold the arm across their chest. The patient will think you are taking their pulse and breath normally. Then after 30 seconds when you get the pulse you can use the other 30 to feel the chest rise and fall.

I hope that is not the case everywhere else! You should be using the AVPU scale. "P" is their LOC if they require painful stimulation in order to get a response. If they respond to pain, they are NOT unresponsive! Head injury is NOT a contraindication for NPA. Worry less about what MAY BE and more about what IS.

Manual stabilization of the airway is not enough on patients with compromised airways. One should use an airway adjunct to prevent the tongue from obstructing the airway. The NPA is really the better adjunct vs. an OPA especially if you are not able to secure the head right away. No, do not wait until the deatailed exam. Thats the requirements for the NREMT-P Course. There are some schools/hospitals that offer the program for anyone regardless of requirements. You pay the price for the class and they will certify you, Its usually a state certification.

We work a rough part of town and when we pulled up to our post he just said "Take me back, I quit"..lol... Even though my partner is an Intermediate he honestly is better at cardiology than I'am. He was a Monitor tech for like 5 years before coming back to EMS...

Good job on the video man. I went through the program last fall and really enjoyed it. It's a difficult program and require's a lot of time, and effort on the part of the student. But, it was ultimately worth it. I think they went a little overboard on the uniform inspections and line formations, but they give you a lot of hand's on experience. It was definitely an experience that I'll remember for the rest of my life. Good luck to all the people that are currently going through the program.

If you've already gone to the orientation (Idk when you took it, but you may have to go again just in case,) then you just have to register for the class like you would any other class. Look in the catalog for the days. You have to sign up for EMS 50 AND 51. Then go get your books (at Mo Val Campus) and uniform (at Woodcrest Uniforms off of Van Buren, down the street from BCTC,) and go to class! Haha

It's a great job if you have the guts and heart. There is no greater reward than a simple "Thank you" after saving someones loved one, and no greater heartbreak than losing a pt. The biggest problem with volunteer EMS is the power struggles and politics that go on within corps. If you don't fit the "good ole boy" mentality you'll never make it. I say this from experence, I am an EMT in Upstate NY (not far from Spencerport) with over 20 years experence. My cert number will reflect that, 144XXX.

same here man! i cant wait... i plan on being a volunteer on the side while im in college, currently i go with a friend of mine who is on the fire department/emt-b, i help out on scene and ride along with him, i cant actually touch the patient, but i do get to help out with bringing supplies and monitoring vitals, i really cannot wait to get out and do the real thing, there is nothing better than saving a life

In my county most of the ambulance companies staff their regular ambulances with two EMT1 or an EMT1 and EMT2 in our county all the Fire Departments staff Paramedics which respond to all EMS calls with the EMTs. One of the local Ambulance companies has a hand full of CCT ambulances which have a paramedic onboard. If all else fails there is always Mercy Air.

Sorry, I get a haircut every two weeks so I don't qualify for being a guitar junkie. It isn't useless to have the EMT-I because it allows services to run BLS with only two EMT's in lower call areas and counties that can't afford to go all out ALS. We have parts of our county covered where it is BLS only because theres only several calls a day and ALS is nearby if needed badly enough, or even Life Star.

I don't know what parts of Ohio these people, who are saying EMT-B's can intubate, live in but you can't do it in this city. The Medical Directors here contraindicate intubation unless it's going to be done by an EMT-I or EMT-P.

In general this is not a basic skill with the exception of a few states (primarily ohio). Even still it is usually only on pulseles and apneic patients. In any event, there are several quality back up airway devices such as LMA, King LT, combitube which are just as effective for someone who does not intubate on a frequent basis. To be efficient at this skill, it must be done on a frequent basis and one every couple months isn't enough. Crunch time is not the time to stress about proficiency.

jessemedic, sorry to say you are incorrect. Basics can intubate in some states, thats why you are tested on your registry. In the state of ohio, basics can intubate, according to protocols but state says pulseless and apenic.

This is a really good video. Also consider 1. Having suction at intubation. It is only mentioned at ETT removal in this video. Hyperventilation in someone with a full stomach could lead to regurgitation and aspiration so be prepared

My name is not paul. A les paul is a guitar. Check your facts. And an EMT-I is not an EMT-B. Out here in California, they're trying to completely get rid of the EMT-I program because it is useless to create a next level after Basic and before Medic. But that might just be a west coast thing. The reason my comment was made was simply because the title of this vid is EMT Basic skills. Intubation is not a basic skill. True, EMT I's may be allowed to intubate, but the title is misleading.
