@flightrulez strangely the TALLBOY bombs did not use their explosive power to destroy coty blocks,but relised on the small fact that be dropping them near a target,the shockwave did all the dirty work for it! and lets face it,a LANCASTER could carry a hell of a load...any way why use a sledgehammer to crack a nut? remember we did not have any ATOM BOMBS...

@grahamkeithtodd Big deal, a bomb that has about 15,000 pounds of explosives to destroy 6-8 city blocks, how about a 5000 pound bomb able to destroy a whole city? I think I would go nuclear rather than using a 20,000 pound bomb, personally I loved the Avro Lancaster and the Halifax over any other bomber of WWII, just for the fact that Canada flew them =D. And because they were good at shit kicking the Germans.

Yea, lots of lives lost invading islands held by japanese... Lots of lives wasted it seems today... I wonder if it would have been far better just to isolate these islands and 'starve' the japs out than to hold a costly costal invasion.. Peleliu for example just seemed pointless to me & considering the sheer will to fight to the death the Japs possessed. Isolation and starvation will take the fight out of anyone eventually...

Of course it was only one. And the cost in American lives invading island by island so that ALL aircraft that overflew Japan had bases to take off from was the real cost in that war. The USN blocked them at sea, the USAAF isolated them on land.

@ sdfz162kingtiger, Remember the plane was developed in 1940's... It was very special in those days. fly at altitudes that bombers never reached before 30,000+ feet.. Fighters had a difficult time combating aircraft at that alititude for two reasons, #1) high wing loading, #2) most Japanese aircraft were naturally aspirated - meaning they lost power as the altitude increased. Also, being so high, most anti-aircraft artillery couldnt fire shells that high.. This was an amazing plane.

I can understand it with people who doesn?t have a lot of money and so they have only one model and after a while they fly not scale like but with maneuvers strange to this type of model. But with a man with experience this thing is unforgivable. He should expected this to be happen sooner or later. If you built scale models you must fly scale. Otherwise built a second aerobatic model and fly with it whatever you like.

The wing has been made wider than the B-29's narrow glider-shaped wing for lift right? BUT is the rebuilt version going to have the tail true to the shape of the B-29? Just do a Google search for B-29. Click "Images" at top left and you'll find side views of the plane. Print it out to scale and cut the wood. :)

FIFI came to asheville nc and was going to do tours but had engine problems so we missed out. But came back every day to match the progress on the engine swap. I watched the new engine being run and adjusted while it folded a stop sign to the ground 100 yards away at idle. There's no sound like really big radial engine. But I flew in a B-17 I will always have that.

My grandpa lived in Gunma prefecture which was in about 100 miles north of Tokyo during WW2. Because it was a rural area, US bombers never dropped bombs there. According to him, he saw B29 bombers flying few times. He told me they had been shiny.

I had a chance to climb aboard an airworthy B-29 ("FIFI"); and I'll tell y'all what: as big as it is, it's a crampy ship to roam through; for the guys in the copit/bombardier compartment to bail out during a fallen ship, they would have to crawl back to the rear through that long tunnel to get to a better exit!... Bailing out through a glass window from the nose could get you chopped up into a human hamburger!!!

If you look above the opening to the bomb-bay, you can see a tunnel with a sign above it stating that it's a 'Crew Tunnel'. The opening to the bomb-bay is just there because it's a tour.

This is some older footage shot at the 2004 SEFF event. I usually don't shoot gas planes, but thought the B-29 worthy of tape. No music, just 4 DA's hummin. This is Mac Hodge's famous B-29 which makes the airshow circuit. Cool. Since 1997 Radio Carbon Art has been producing high quality films for the R/C airplane community.

@sparks1504 the later B29's were equipped with methanol and nitrous oxide injection to give the engines twice the horsepower. This was the answer to an enguagement with a Hitler era fighter jet. Having this much horsepower allowed the pilot to fly the bomber in this fashon to evade these aircraft and shoot them down. Basically to dogfight fighter aircraft giving us air dominance over Europe.

Thank you, and much appreciation to your Father for information and his service. He must be quite source of interesting stories. *Fresh engines* certainly could make all the difference. I was basing some of that comment on Paul Tibbets account of making practice drops near Salton Sea in California once they stripped down b-29 that and were able to outpace p-47's while also attaining 34,000 feet elevation from the usual 30,000.

My Dad was B29 pilot and says that the max load of 20k pounds was very seldom carried as that would shorten the range too much...10k pounds was more the norm, depending on the type of raid, of course. Usual cruising speed was about 180-200 mph. The top speed of 357 mph was "pure fantasy" according to Dad unless it was totally empty, had fresh engines, and a tail wind.

@modelairplanenut - I did the same thing on my B-29 when I built it aropund 10 years ago - I get all my engines, wring and switches along with battey boxes (Mounted in the bomb bays, on mine) at radio shack. I also lit the interior with small white-ish / yellow-ish lights I got from Radio shack.

Yes, I hit my head against the wall several times. I have to find the time to remove the decals and apply new ones. For the aluminum finish I used a combination of chrome paint and foil. I agree it wasn't an easy kit to build, mainly because it was so big, not as easy to handle as a small kit. It is also heavy. But it looks impressive when finished.

Yes, there is a wire, but that is the radio wire standard on all B-29 airplanes... and you are right, sometimes I have extra wires made by spiders. I need to find a nice big glass case to enclose it. I still need to remove the star insignias from the back and re-install new ones in the right position.

@eus478 : You entirely missed the point of what I was saying. It's very easy to configure an airplane to carry different types of bomb. A bomb is carried cargo. It's not a property of the aircraft. On the other hand, how MUCH weight in bombs you can carry, or the range you can carry them - those are properties of the aircraft. The B-29 performs well at those measures. But the fact that B-29s are what happened to be in use at the time the atom bomb was ready is not a property of B-29s.

So the "world´s deadliest aircraft" kills not other airplanes, but human beings below, including elder, women and children.
